EXTENSIVE ESL PROGRAM

Southlands offers a detailed ESL program with multiple levels. Before students are given a schedule of classes, each student is assessed for his/her English language skills through the iTEP SLATE test. This determines the fluency of English in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Based on the raw scores, each student is placed in a leveled group of courses. These levels are beginning, intermediate, advanced and SDAIE. Within each level, the courses the students will take include, reading, writing, social science, science, and Bible. Students will also be taking grade level/English level Math.

English Test Scores:

  • We provide iTEP testing when students are accepted for proper placement.

Interview:

  • 9th Grade or below: None required
  • 10th Grade or above: Skype interview required

SCIENCE

Students take a minimum of 2 lab sciences in order to fulfill their graduation requirements. These include Biology, Honors Biology, Chemistry, or Honors Chemistry. Students are involved in a science fair competition each year. Categories for the fair include life science, chemistry, physical science, and engineering. Students have placed in 1st and 2nd over the past 4 years.

Ongoing Community Service

  1. Animal Rescue Center: Walk pets, clean cages and take photos to help post on website
    to attract more people to adopt animals.
  2. Senior Center: Make art & craft for Seniors and sing song to them at holiday.
  3. Museum: Students facilitate learning experiences for school children and adults in the museum. Fulfill essential visitor services.
  4. Science: Serving science center for exhibition and event.
  5. Medical: Volunteer at different department at Red Cross, hospital and healthcare center as need.
  6. Libraries: Clean and sort library materials and displays, Assist with children’s story times or art activities.
  7. Donation: Cleaning and sorting the clothing donated, serving food for homeless.

Group Community Service Event:

  1. Food for Hungry: Handing out packets, answering questions and aiding other in signing up to sponsor a child at Christian Concert.
  2. Love Festival: Event Serving developmental disabilities for games, food, help setting up and closing down the booth etc
  3. Jesus Love carnival volunteer for children at Halloween.
  4. Toy Drive at Christmas, help wrapping toys donated to all over the world.
  5. Celebrate the holiday season at the Homestead Museum.
  6. Foothill Family Thrift Store packing, cleaning and selling donated clothing.
