Hosting an International Student Tips
Although there is a generous stipend for host families, the ultimate goal is to make your house feel like a home for international students.
Preparedness is the first step. Ensure you have paperwork handy and that your training is complete. Ensure your student’s room is clean, neat, and ready for them to move in. We also suggest familiarizing yourself with your student’s schedule.
When your student arrives, welcome them warmly and give them a tour of your home. Introduce them to family members, share house rules, and do your best to communicate effectively. Be flexible with meals and allow them to rest.
Once your student is settled, keep them engaged and involve them in family activities. Sensitivity is key–remain aware of cultural differences and how that influences communication. You can contact AmeriStudent 24/7 for assistance in resolving any complex challenges that may arise.
