How to Host an International Student in Fresno

If you’re interested in hosting a student, the first step is to fill out our application. You can expect to submit pictures of your home, references, and family member names, but it should only take about 15 minutes to complete.

Once your application is submitted, we do an intensive background check of all of the adults living in your home. When everyone comes back clear, the student-family matching process begins.

At the end of this stage, we do an in-home interview, where you and your family can meet your program coordinator and finalize any questions or concerns. Once an agreement is set, your student will be placed, and we’ll be here to offer 24/7 support for as long as your student’s stay.

Requirements to Host an International Student

The requirements to host an international student are very basic, although extremely important to ensure your student has an amazing visit.

Along with transport to and from school, your family must be able to provide a private room with a study desk, laundry facility, 2 meals every weekday, and 3 meals on weekends.

Do You Get Paid to Host an International Student?

Because host families have such a large responsibility opening up their home and caring for another household member, Ameristudent provides one of the largest monthly stipends in the United States, so families can make money in the process.

You can reasonably expect an offer between $1,000 and $1400, although it will differ. Feel free to speak to one of our staff for a better breakdown.

Hosting an International Student Tips

One of the most important tips for hosting a student is to make them feel as comfortable as possible. Being far away from home in a new city with people you haven’t met before can seem overwhelming at first, so make an effort to give them time to adjust once they arrive.

Make sure their room is clean and ready, and if it helps, try to learn some of their culture by picking up native phrases or cooking a familiar meal.

Invite your student into your family by including them in all of your household bonding times, whether that’s at the dinner table or in the city.
